Rufus Vernon Matthews Rufus Vernon Matthews, 82, a resident of 781 Ben Lee Road in Thomasville, died Monday evening, April 30, 2007, at his residence. He was born April 24, 1925, in Davidson County, a son of the late Carmer Lee Matthews and Effie Trent Matthews. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during World War II. Mr. Matthews was a retired employee of Alma Desk, Inc. of High Point. He enjoyed his hobby of clock maker and restorer, gardening and his passion of coastal fishing with his son-in-law Ray Harris. Mr. Matthews was a member Southside Baptist Church, the C.R. Turner Sunday School Class, served as a Deacon and Usher. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, C.L. Matthews and Howard Matthews. On Nov 4 1944, he was married to Dorothy Pauline Swaney, who survives of the home. Also surving are children Shelia Diane Matthews Maxwell and her husband Michael of Thomasville, Paul Matthews and his wife Diane of Thomasville and Helen Swaney Harris of Thomasville; a sister Donnie Mae Shuler of Thomasville; a brother Lonnie “Mac” Matthews and his wife Vivian of Thomasville; four grandchildren, Heather LeAnn Adams and her husband Chris of Lexington, Holly Rae lackey and her husband Ryan of Ramseur and Corby Vernon Matthews of Thomasville and Lisa Snyder and her husband Michael of Thomasville; two step grandsons, Michael Lomax and Joshua Lomax both of Pinehurst; and three great-grandchildren, Allie and Kenny Houston and Shane Snyder; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. 5-3-2007 at Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Blakley officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Matthews will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 P.M. and will receive them other times at the home. The family request memorials be directed to Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. Mrs. Dorothy Pauline Swaney Matthews, age 81, of 781 Ben Lee Road died Thursday November 29, 2007 in Liberty Woods Nursing Center. She was born July 6, 1926 in Randolph County daughter of the late Birt Swaney and Lula Mae Younts Swaney. She was a retired employee of Kayby Mills Inc. and was a member of Southside Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and in the Church Choir. She was married November 4, 1944 to Rufus Vernon Matthews who preceded her in death April 30, 2007. Surviving are two daughters, Shelia Diane Matthews Maxwell and husband Michael and Helen Swaney Harris all of Thomasville; one son, Paul Matthews and wife Diane of Thomasville; Sister-In-Law, Donnie Swaney of Thomasville; four grandchildren, Heather LeAnn Adams and husband Chris of Lexington, Holly Rae Lackey and husband Ryan of Ramseur, Corby Vernon Matthews and Lisa Snyder and husband Michael all of Thomasville; two step-grandsons, Michael Lomax and Joshua Lomax of Pinehurst, NC; three great grandchildren, Allie and Kenny Houston and Shane Snyder. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Blakley. The interment will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church thirty minutes prior to the service. The family will be at J. C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville Friday from 6 to 8 PM and other times at the home 781 Ben Lee Road.
